Work and Play in May, 6.25
May was a pretty busy month. For my main contract I’m developing our first full annual report for the department. Content wrangling, illustrations, edits, layout and a good measure of Chat GPT thrown into the copy blender. On top of that have been doing a bit of photography after hours. Oh, and then I took a week+ off and attended the Rocky Mountain Carvers Roundup in Midway, UT. Most of the post here is about that, so here it goes…
Tables full of roughouts from Caricature Carvers of America instructors and tables full of carvers, well… carving. Close to 100 carvers attended, plus instructors and others.
I had full-day classes with Joe You (noggin), Mitch Cartledge (gambler), John Overby (sea captain), Dwayne Gosnell (cow), Pat Moore (ringmaster), and two evening sessions with Dave Stetson. Good long days of carving. I’m eager to see what I’ve learned show up in my next carvings.
My little closet photo-studio is putting out some new work for Oakley Standard Issue. I’m proud of this work and will post more of this later on my portfolio pages. There’s way more detail behind the scenes than just these pics, with many versions and options for each style.
View from Heber City towards the mountains. We had a bit of snow on the first morning, then it warmed up to mid 70s the rest of the week.
On the drive back from Midway I stayed over in Henderson NV and took in the Atomic Museum and the Cactus Gardens at the Ethel M chocolate factory. Nice stops.
After all that carving it was time to tune up a bunch of gouges. I reprofiled several gouges to have rounded corners and then got them all to wicked sharp. They’re ready to make chips again.
